We are still here at Rockwater Marina in Little Rock.  It started raining about 10:00 last night and rained all night and most of day today.  Never rained real hard just a steady rain, but our we have been having some water come in under our door from the front deck, even though we have now put a sheet of plastic up to stop the rain from coming directly down on the deck, there is still a lot of wet deck left over from yesterday.   Spent part of the day by taking up some of the foam rubber floor pads that we have down and drying out the floor with our little propane heater and a fan so that has improved things a lot and also warmed things up a bit in the cabin

Cooked scalloped potatoes and ham for supper, with chocolate pudding and cherry/rhubarb pie for dessert.

Day 12, Sat, Oct 17th, on Mississippi River below Crutherville, MO.but in Arkansas

Day 12, Sat, Oct 17th, on Mississippi River below Crutherville, MO.but in Arkansas

We got up about 7:00AM.  Temperature this morning was down to 37 degrees, but we were plenty warm in the sleeping bags.   We got underway at a little after 9:00.  We had better going today with a north/northeast wind so we had both the wind and the current helping us.   However, the wind was cold and we kept our windbreakers and jackets on.

Unlike yesterday, we only met 3 or 4 towboats all day, so we cruised at about 10 mph for most of the time.

We stopped at Cruthersville, Mo. for gas, pulled the boat up to a boat ramp, unloaded the tanks and wagon, a visitor said there was a station a few blocks away so Milton started out with wagon, and after a few blocks, someone gave him a ride and he was back in a short time.

We continued on and anchored behing a large rock wingdam a few miles below Cruthersville and are now in Arkansas.   Had some trouble anchoring at first because of wind and current, but finally found a quieter current close to wingdam and are now here for the night.

We will be cooking hamburgers again tonight with cake and pie for desert.

Day 10, Thurs, Oct 15th

We are now on the Ohio river and heading to Mississippi River which we hope to reach yet today.  We are at Day 10 of the trip and are publishing daily pages which you can access on the links to the right.   These page have more details and pictures

Day 5, Sun, Oct 11, Rm 121 to Rm 96, at Pebble Isle Marina, near New Johnsonville, TN

We stayed at Crooked Creek store area last night. After making some repairs to front splash board and conue holder plus some other items it was after 4:00 Pm and almost to late to make anymore traveling so decided to wait till morning and get an early start. Toward evening someone said there was some crappie fishing area upstream a little way so we motored up the crooked creek which is well named and tried a little fishing, No crappies, but Milt caught a little catfish, threw him back. got back to dock area about dusk, ate some salami sandwiches, some cherry/rubarb pie , read a while and turned in about 9:00PM

We got up this morning about 700 AM, but so foggy we could see over 100 yards, much to foggy to travel the river, ate breakfast and then found out our
GPS/mapping/depth sounder unit were not working and the motor would not start. So started working on that. Could not find it easily as it was both a dead battery and some corroded connects and a bad fuse. It was after 12 before we got started, but mde good time. There was only a light southerly wind and water was calm to slight ripple and made good traveling.

made 25 miles and stopped about 3:30 at Pebble Isle Marina, got gas and a dock for the night, mostly because they have both showers and laundry facilities. Hope for another early start tomorrow.

Day 5, Saturday, Oct 10, at Crooked Creek Marina, RM 121

We are now at the Crooked Creek Marina, near RM 121 of Tennesse River after starting last Tuesday at mile 264, so have come about 143 miles in the past 5 days. It has been hard to get any computer time in while traveling between being busy, or water to rough for easy typing, or not having internet access at our anchorage spots. so here is the following for the past days

*************************************************************

Day One, Tues, Oct. 6th, . . . We launched the boat on Sat. on Lake Wilson, about 6 miles east of Florence, AL, and then ran it about 36-8 miles up Shoal creek to dock at our Cousin Johns who has a house and dock on the lake. . . . Then on Saturday, we took the pickup and boat trailer to Springfield, MO. to Milt’s son, Nathan, who will then come to Tulsa to pick up up at the end of our trip. We returned on Monday. . . . .

So today, we left Cousin John’s and headed downstream, but only about 6-8 miles and thru the Wilson Lock and Dam and pulled into Florence Harbor Marina for overnight and to finish loading many of our supplys. ….. .. After Milt explained our trip and our intentions, as well as that we had a winter home in Florence, the harbor master said that we could then stay over night for free.

So we finished most of the loading and return to the greenbrier house for overnight.

Day Two, Wed, Oct. 7th, . . . Left FlorenceHarbor, arrived Waterloo, Al, about 29 miles

In the morning , we got some more groceries, and finished loading the rest of our supplys, our former neighbor on Greenbrier, Leon Nale, arrived at the dock to see us off and also helped ferry our car back to Greenbrier. . . .We left Florence Harbor about 12 Noon and motored downriver about 29 miles and stopped at a city dock at Waterloo, AL. about 4:00PM and stayed overnight.. . . .Did not get much written on the logbooks and web blog. . . spent most of the daylight ours tring to organized the boat, supplys, etc.. . .Finally, at some peanut butter sandwiches and some cupcakes for supper. . . . a few bugs showed up so we went lights out and hit the sack, . .. read books for short time but then to sleep.

Day 4, Friday , Oct 9th, River mile 192 to 141 up Cedar Creek, 51 miles

We woke up this morning with a fairly dense fog as it got light, which started to burn off while we ate a short breakfast.   We left our anchorage about 8:00 AM with still a light fog but improved very quickly.   We stopped at Salilto, Tn for gas at the station where we got gas last trip, but it was all closed up.   A fisherman said there was a station about a 1/4 mile up the road, so Milt to wagon and several tanks there to fill.    then on down river.

We are still meeting a lot of large cruiser-type boats that throw a significant wake that we have to slow way down and cross and still take some water over the bow.   the wake waves are 2-3 feet high and apparently these operator with their expensive big boat don’t really care at lot.   I tried asking of radio for them to slow a little when meeting someone, but I don’t think they really care.
About 2:00PM, a north wind picked up and we were heading right into the wind and waves.so it got pretty rough and we took a lot of water over the bow.  About 4:00 PM, we reach a little creek called cedar creek and pulled up into it and anchored for the night.   it is only about 50 yards wide, tree lined, and 6-8 feed deep so a nice quiet spot and, hopefully,  not to many bugs.

We cooked scalloped potatos with ham for supper with apple and cherry/rubarb pie for dessert.   Milt read a while and I worked on computer log, but have no internet to connect and post logs.      Had a little rain last night after dark but not much.    Temperatures have been getting down to about 60 degrees at night so have not used the sleeping bag at all, just a sheet and light blanket.

Day 5, Saturday, Oct 10th, Rm 141 to RM 121 at Crooked Creek

After breakfast this morning , we left anchorage at about 8:15 am and had good going for about an hour before the north wind again picked up, then the waves again.   we tried staying on lee side of river by switching sides but even that did not work well.    Are having a lot of water break up and over the front, so makes the front deck very wet and some gets into the cabin, mostly tracked in on our feet.     In crossing the river the last time, we suffered a little damage to the canoe brackets, but are now at Crooked Creek Marina which is very sheltered and will get gas and make some repairs.    We will stay and either continue on if the wind dies or maybe stay overnight.

We have not taken a lot of photos as we traveled this same section 2 years ago, see rivertrip13 blog and have seen most of it before.    will post some actual separate pages with some photos later today or tonite.
